What does USDA certified organic mean?

Feb 09, 2017

Well, for starters it means that we're awesome. But besides that it means that we're allowed to label our toothpastes as "organic" and we get to use the USDA logo. In order to do this, products must comply with a strict set of criteria:

  1. Produced without any of the excluded methods, (e.g., genetic engineering or ionizing radiation).
  2. Produced using allowed substances (e.g., no synthetics).
  3. Overseen by a USDA National Organic Program-authorized certifying agent, following all USDA organic regulations. (in our case we were certified NOP by EcoCert)
  4. 95%+ of the product’s ingredients must be organic. Link to What Does It Mean to Be USDA Certified Organic Article.
